About the book

From Mother Hubbard to Marbella is the extraordinary tale of a girl from humble beginnings in the north of England to her glittering entertainment career in Marbella, Spain.

Most of us have one good career but some unusual people manage to succeed at everything they do and seem to live several lifetimes in the space of one.

This book is the true story of Jessie Brooks, born in pre-war Stockton on Tees, and follows her life during the dark days of the war, through her early marriage and tragic loss of her only child and her adventures in the antiques trade, both in England and Spain. Along the way Jessie successfully owned and managed a theatrical boarding house and was literally ‘landlady to the stars’.

Twenty five years ago, in search of peace, and a new life, Jessie moved to Marbella where she met the love of her life Tommy Spring. He had been a top trumpeter in London for many years and with his own band had played the swankiest of venues. He performed before King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Variety Show and also for Princess Margaret.

From Mother Hubbard to Marbella is also the story of Tommy’s last twenty-four years with Jessie and opens the doors to the entertainment scene of Marbella in the 70s through to present day. After teaching Jessie to play the piano, they performed together in all the major nightspots and were dearly loved by visitors and residents of the coast alike.

Throughout the book are poignant reminders of Jessie’s life in the form of song lyrics that capture the drama and love she found on her long journey from the north of England to Marbella.
